Storytime--Food

Today's storytime was full of little guys, so I skipped the first book and added If You Give A Mouse A Cookie. We had a good time, and I was even able to throw in an early literacy aside for the first time. I didn't do it during storytime--going to work on that--but I talked to the moms later about the link between rhyming books and phonological awareness.

 Opening Song:

Fingerplay:


Make A Cake!

Mix the batter, stir the batter
(make a stirring motion with one arm/hand)
Shake some flour in
(make a shaking motion with one arm/hand)
Mix the batter, stir the batter
(make a stirring motion with one arm/hand)
Place it in a tin
(pretend to pour)
Sprinkle in some chocolate chips 
(pretend to sprinkle)
Put it in to bake
(open both hands, palms up, and slide them forward)
Then open wide the oven door
(pretend to open door)
And out comes the cake!

Ice Cream Set

“Ice Cream Colors”
We have ice cream, the best in town,
Let us begin with chocolate brown.

Now, let us scoop us some bubble-gum pink,
It is sweet and yummy, the best, some think.

Here is ice cream minty and green,
It is the creamiest I have ever seen.

Yellow ice cream is lemony and tart,
We like its taste from the very start.

Scoops of blueberry would make my day,
Look at all this ice cream, hip, hip hurray!

Red ice cream is a strawberry delight,
All these scoops are a heavenly sight.

Vanilla white is a popular flavor,
It tastes very good to an ice-cream craver.

Purple ice cream really gives me a kick,
Good and yummy till the very last lick.

Ice cream, ice cream, what a cool sensation,
We love ice cream in any combination!

Action Activity:

Bananas Unite!
(clap hands above head)
We pick bananas, pick pick bananas
(do a “milking” motion up and down in the air)
And peel bananas, peel peel bananas
(hands spread to side-right and left alternating)
And chop bananas, chop chop bananas
(karate chop in front of body)
And mash bananas, mash mash bananas
(hands in fists, “pounding” the air)
And eat bananas, eat eat bananas
(“scoop” bananas into your mouth)
Then go bananas!
(jump around wildly)

Pizza Party!!

I cut out white circles for the dough, red circles for the sauce, and had lots of paper scraps for the pizza toppings. The kids had lots of fun making their perfect pizza--my favorite was the little boy who smothered his in "cheese"!
