Storytime--Superheroes!

I had way too much fun with this storytime! The kids did too, so it was great all around. Still gotta work on my asides. I have the best on intentions to say them, but I get caught up in the flow or storytime and forget. I got one in there though at the beginning so that's good.  The craft was amazing and the kids looked adorable zooming around the library!

Books:

The Amazing Adventures of Bumblebee Boy by David Soman and Jacky Davis
Baron von Baddie and the Ice Ray Incident by George McClements
Princess Super Kitty by Antoinette Portis
Kapow by George O'Connor

Early Literacy Aside: Parents, we are starting something new in Storytime. This is our storytime song, which we'll be singing to start storytime. Not only does it allow us to get settled in (and not worry about running a little late), but singing is a really important component of early literacy. Don't worry if you're not the best singer in the world--I'm certainly not! We'll just have fun with it!

Opening Song:

Clap and Sing Hello!” (Tune: Farmer in the Dell)
We clap and sing hello,
We clap and sing hello,
With our friends at storytime,
We clap and sing hello!
(Wave and sing hello; stomp and sing hello.)

 Fingerplay:
5 superheroes ready to fly
Here comes the villain, Stop that guy!
This superhero can save the day.
Off he flies – up, up, and away!
Count down from 4, 3, 2, 1, 0

1 little 2 little 3 little superheroes
4 little 5 little 6 little superheroes
7 little 8 little 8 little superheroes
10 superheros save the day!

Action Activity:
Superhero, superhero turn around
Superhero, superhero touch the ground
Superhero, superhero put on your suit
Superhero, Superhero put on your boots.
Superhero, Superhero, jump up high
Superhero, Superhero, fly, fly, fly
Superhero, Superhero, turn around.
Superhero, Superhero, please sit down.

Early Literacy Aside: This is our goodbye song, which we'll be singing to end storytime. When we sing, we slow language down so it's easier to hear syllables and different sounds. That is a big help to your kids as they are learning to read!

Goodbye Song:
Clap and Sing goodbye!” (Tune: Farmer in the Dell)
We clap and sing goodbye,
We clap and sing goodbye,
With our friends at storytime,
We clap and sing goodbye!
(Wave and sing goodbye; stomp and sing goodbye.)

Craft:

Capes!

Displaying IMG_20140926_124712_602.jpg

Let the kids color their cape whatever they'd like--great writing practice! Then draw a line from the collar to the bottom edge of the shirt. Cut along this line and around the collar, and you've got a cape!

Obviously the Flash doesn't wear a cape, but I was wearing a Flash shirt so I wanted to match!

Other possible early literacy tips:

Writing--scribbling and drawing as practice for writing
Play--So much imagination and pretend play with these capes!
Singing--The "Three Little Superheros" song--wonderful for hearing separate syllables
Reading--Rare words abound in superhero books (especially in Baron Von Baddie)
Talking--Ask the kids questions as you read! The conversation helps them become familiar with new words.

Storytime--Food

Today's storytime was full of little guys, so I skipped the first book and added If You Give A Mouse A Cookie. We had a good time, and I was even able to throw in an early literacy aside for the first time. I didn't do it during storytime--going to work on that--but I talked to the moms later about the link between rhyming books and phonological awareness.

Books:

Gregory the Terrible Eater by Mitchell Sharmat
The Pigeon Finds A Hot Dog by Mo Williems
If You Give A Mouse A Cookie by Laura Joffe Numeroff
Carrot Soup by John Segal
Secret Pizza Party by Adam Rubin

 Opening Song:

Clap and Sing Hello!” (Tune: Farmer in the Dell)
We clap and sing hello,
We clap and sing hello,
With our friends at storytime,
We clap and sing hello!
(Wave and sing hello; stomp and sing hello.)

Fingerplay:

Make A Cake!

Mix the batter, stir the batter
(make a stirring motion with one arm/hand)
Shake some flour in
(make a shaking motion with one arm/hand)
Mix the batter, stir the batter
(make a stirring motion with one arm/hand)
Place it in a tin
(pretend to pour)
Sprinkle in some chocolate chips
(pretend to sprinkle)
Put it in to bake
(open both hands, palms up, and slide them forward)
Then open wide the oven door
(pretend to open door)
And out comes the cake!
(open both hands, palms up, and slide them forward)

Ice Cream Set

“Ice Cream Colors”
We have ice cream, the best in town,
Let us begin with chocolate brown.

Now, let us scoop us some bubble-gum pink,
It is sweet and yummy, the best, some think.

Here is ice cream minty and green,
It is the creamiest I have ever seen.

Yellow ice cream is lemony and tart,
We like its taste from the very start.

Scoops of blueberry would make my day,
Look at all this ice cream, hip, hip hurray!

Red ice cream is a strawberry delight,
All these scoops are a heavenly sight.

Vanilla white is a popular flavor,
It tastes very good to an ice-cream craver.

Purple ice cream really gives me a kick,
Good and yummy till the very last lick.

Ice cream, ice cream, what a cool sensation,
We love ice cream in any combination!

Action Activity:

Bananas Unite!
(clap hands above head)
We pick bananas, pick pick bananas
(do a “milking” motion up and down in the air)
And peel bananas, peel peel bananas
(hands spread to side-right and left alternating)
And chop bananas, chop chop bananas
(karate chop in front of body)
And mash bananas, mash mash bananas
(hands in fists, “pounding” the air)
And eat bananas, eat eat bananas
(“scoop” bananas into your mouth)
Then go bananas!
(jump around wildly)

Pizza Party!!

I cut out white circles for the dough, red circles for the sauce, and had lots of paper scraps for the pizza toppings. The kids had lots of fun making their perfect pizza--my favorite was the little boy who smothered his in "cheese"!

Storytime--Sharks!

I only had one family come for storytime today, but we had a good time! They were so excited about the shark books and enthralled the entire time. We did the flannelboard, but after that they just couldn't wait to grab the next book! We of course ended with the craft. They loved the books though, they brought home Shark vs. Train and The Three Little Fish and the Big Bad Shark (which they wanted me to read again!). Storytimes with kids that excited about reading are the best, and the small size let me really concentrate on them.

Books:

Shark vs. Train by Chris Barton
The Three Little Fish and the Big Bad Shark by Ken Geist
Nugget and Fang by Tammi Sauer
I'm A Shark by Bob Shea

Fingerplay:

Two hungry sharks  (hold up squid hands with both hands)

Swimming on a wave   (make squid hands "swim")

One named Dorothy, one named Dave  (hold up squid hands with both hands)

Chomp, chomp, Dorothy  (make right squid hand go nom nom)

Chomp, chomp, Dave (make left squid hand go nom nom)

Swim away Dorothy (make right squid "swim")

Swim away Dave!  (make left squid "swim")

Five little fish, swimming in the sea
Teasing Mr. Shark
"You can't catch me!"
When along came Mr. Shark, as quiet as can be..
AND CHOMP! caught that fishy right out of the sea!
(Repeat for 4, 3, 2, 1)
So alone swam Mr. Shark as quiet as can be
And he looked and he looked...
"No more fishies for me!"
