The Three Billy Goats Gruff
Once upon a time there were three billy goats who lived on a meadow on a mountaintop. They were brothers, and their last name was Gruff.
The goat ate grass all spring and summer. They ate so much that all the grass in their meadow was gone! They were hungry, and needed to find a new meadow.
There was a meadow on a nearby mountain, where the grass was thick and green. But the billy goats would have to cross and old, creaky bridge to get there.
Little Billy Goat Gruff decided to go first. He took one step, two steps, three steps on the bridge, going trip-trap-trip trap. Suddenly, a voice boomed "WHO'S THAT TRIP-TRAPPING OVER MY BRIDGE?" Two big hands reached up from under the bridge...
"It is I, Little Billy Goat Gruff" he said. A big troll jumped in the bridge. "I AM GOING TO EAT YOU!" he roared!
"No, don't eat me! I'm too little to eat. My brother is coming next, and he is much bigger than I am" said the little billy goat. The troll scratched his head, then said "YOU ARE TOO SMALL FOR A SNACK. YOU MAY CROSS THE BRIDGE." And the little billy goat did.
A little while late, Middle Billy Goat Gruff started to cross the bridge. He took one step, two steps, three steps on the bridge, going trip-trap-trip trap. Suddenly, a voice boomed "WHO'S THAT TRIP-TRAPPING OVER MY BRIDGE?" Two big hands reached up from under the bridge...
"It is I, Middle Billy Goat Gruff." he said. A big troll jumped in the bridge. "I AM GOING TO EAT YOU!" he roared!
"No, don't eat me! I'm too little to eat. My brother is coming next, and he is much bigger than I am" said the little billy goat. The troll scratched his head, then said "YOU ARE TOO SMALL FOR DINNER. YOU MAY CROSS THE BRIDGE." And the little billy goat did.
Finally, Big Billy Goat Gruff started to cross the bridge. He took one step, two steps, three steps on the bridge, going trip-trap-trip trap. Suddenly, a voice boomed "WHO'S THAT TRIP-TRAPPING OVER MY BRIDGE?" Two big hands reached up from under the bridge...
"It is I, Big Billy Goat Gruff." he said. A big troll jumped in the bridge. "I AM GOING TO EAT YOU!" he roared!
"No, you're not!" said the big billy goat. He lowered his head and ran at the troll, knocking him into the water! Big Billy Goat crossed the bridge and found his brothers in the meadow. And the three billy goats ate the green grass together for the rest of the year.

Action Activity:
Acting Out the Three Billy Goats Gruff
Ask the kids what happened, then act it out together. We started out by eating the grass all up, then looking for a nice meadow. Then we took 3 steps on the bridge all crouched down as Little Billy Goat, convinced the troll to spare us and ran (in place, of course) across the bridge. Then we did it again as Middle Billy Goat, then we ran over the bad guy as Big Billy Goat!
