Storytime--Feelings

Storytime--Feelings

I was very disappointed with this storytime. The kids sat really well, but there was no interaction. Maybe they were just shy kids, I don't know, but I ended up skipping the action song because they just weren't interested. They really enjoyed the craft though, so I guess that's something.

Books

Llama Llama Misses Mama by Anna Dewdney
Smile! by Leigh Hodgkinson
Crankenstein by Samantha Berger
Lazy Daisy, Cranky Frankie

Fingerplay:

 My Feelings
When I am sad, I feel like crying. (rub eyes)
When I am proud, I feel like trying. (head held high)
When I feel curious, I want to know. (look up, wondering)
When I’m impatient, I want to go! (cross arms, tap foot)
When I feel angry, I look this way. (angry look)
When I feel happy, I smile all day. (big smile)
When I am puzzled I make a shrug. (shrug shoulders)
When I feel loving, I want to hug. (hug yourself)

(from http://www.michigan.gov/documents/hal/lm_2009MR_ProgrammingGuide_Part4_288132_7.pdf)

Action Song:

If you're happy and you know it...clap your hands
If you're silly and you know it...shake your head
If you're angry and you know it....say boo hoo
If you're scared and you know it... hide your eyes

Flannelboard:

Faces
(Happy, sad, mad, scared, silly). The idea had been to build the faces together, than use this as a guide to the action song and fingerplay. Unfortunately, it bombed big time)

Storytime--St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick's Day Storytime

This one went really well. This was the first time I've really gotten a fingerplay to work well, so I was very happy. The kids really enjoyed There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Clover, and they also enjoyed The Story of the Leprechaun. The other two were OK. Both the flannelboards went over great; I'm glad I decided to do both! The kids liked the craft as well, and there was a lot of munching going on (by me mostly, but the kids too haha!)

Books:

Good Luck Bear by Greg Foley
The Story of the Leprechaun by Katherine Tegen
Fancy Nancy: Just My Luck! by Jane O'Connor
There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Clover by Lucille Colandro

Fingerplay:

Leprechaun, Leprechaun by Karen M. Smith

Leprechaun, leprechaun
Hiding in the hay (hide pointer finger under opposite hand)
Leprechaun, leprechaun
Don’t you run away! (hop pointer finger around)
Leprechaun, leprechaun
Let’s go out and play (hop both pointer fingers together)
Leprechaun, leprechaun
It’s St. Patrick’s Day! (move pointer fingers up and down)

Flannelboard:

Displaying IMG_20140314_132405_461.jpg

Leprechaun, leprechaun
What do you see?
I have a red heart here with me.
 Leprechaun, leprechaun
What do you see?
I have an orange star here with me.
Leprechaun, leprechaun
What do you see?
I have a yellow moon here with me.
Leprechaun, leprechaun
What do you see?
I have a green clover here with me.
Leprechaun, leprechaun
What do you see?
I have a blue diamond here with me.
Leprechaun, leprechaun
What do you see?
I have a purple horse shoe here with me.
Let’s see what colors we have – red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple.
What does that make?
A Rainbow!
And what can you find at the end of the rainbow?
Leprechaun’s pot of gold!

Flannelboard #2

Displaying IMG_20140314_132510_869.jpg

Before you start this flannelboard, hide the gold behind one of the colored pots

Leprechaun knows he has some gold, but he has so many different pots, he doesn’t know where it is!  Let’s see if we can help him find it!
Leprechaun, leprechaun, tiny and bold.
Where, oh where is your gold?
What does the _(color)_ pot hold?

Storytime--Dr. Seuss

Dr. Seuss Storytime

I ended up changing my original plan for this storytime because I got someone to play the Cat in the Hat! When I have a guest I do fewer books, because the kids normally are so interested in the guest! I also like to give them extra time to take pictures and give hugs.  I ended up skipping the fingerplay today but I wanted to put it in here for future reference. We ended up doing both a craft and a science experiment today, so that took the place of the fingerplay.

Books:

The Cat in the Hat
Marvin K. Mooney Would You Please Go Now!

Fingerplay:

One little cat on a sunny day
Put on his hat and went out to play
Two little cats when the sky turned dark
Put on their hats and went to the park
Three little cats when the sky turned blue
Put on their hats and went to the zoo
Four little cats by the kitchen door
Put on their hats and went to the store
Five little cats on a sunny day
Put on their hats and they all ran away.

(Fingerplay found at Mel's Desk: http://melissa.depperfamily.net/blog/?p=760)

Flannelboard:

One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish

One fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish
Black fish, blue fish, old fish, new fish
This one has a little star
This one has a little car
Say! What a lot of fish there are!

Craft:

Oobleck!

Displaying IMG_20140307_114232_566.jpg
1 part Water
2 parts cornstarch
Food Coloring

With this one, I summarized the story of Bartholomew and the Oobleck, and let the kids play with it a little bit. It rinses off immediately in water so it's not terribly messy, and I had a very small group today

Wockets in our Pockets

Displaying IMG_20140307_122202_580.jpg

This was my fancier Wocket (I printed it out), but the kids got to color theirs and walk around with Wockets in their pockets.
